When children begin to understand reasons for their own behavior and the behavior of others and are given places and ways of showing regret and empathy, they learn to effectively manage conflict and contribute to the growth of nonviolence and peace in our world.
Conflict is a natural part of living in community. The Friends School of Minnesota model of conflict resolution was developed from an understanding that children can learn to approach conflict in positive ways. When we address conflict in a positive way it can be a source of emotional growth and it can improve and deepen our relationships.

Conflict resolution teaches kids how to listen. It taught me how to listen, and listen to understand. Developing empathy and developing the ability to truly listen to one another and understand another person’s point of view is essential for human development. It’s essential for the health of community. It’s essential for a democratic society.

How The Program Can Help Your School or Community
The processes outlined in our conflict resolution training will help teachers and administrators:
- give children the tools they need to develop their social-emotional skills to help them be successful problem solvers at school and in the greater community.
- model that conflict is a part of life and that we can address conflict openly and stay in relationship.
- create a more peaceful classroom.
- learn how to help children navigate conflict without as much adult intervention.
- have more confidence in working with children to address conflict and stay in relationship.
The Training – How It Will Work
We offer a variety of training formats depending on the needs of your organization. Training could be anywhere from an hour-long overview session to a day-long on-site training. In general, we prefer in-person, but we could do online sessions if we can still meet the objectives of the training program and your organization’s goals
