These values are very important at the sale as well.
- Simplicity and Integrity – The plant sale is run with the same care and intention we bring to everything at our school. We thoughtfully consider every decision, always keeping our shoppers, our growers, and our community in mind. How do we make the sale better next year? How do we simplify the shopping experience?
- Peace – Our students understand that climate change is one of the greatest threats to peace in their lifetime. Gardening and green spaces have real benefits for mental health, for neighborhoods, and for the planet. This sale is one small, rooted act of peace.
- Community – Community is extremely important at our school and that spirit extends beyond our walls to include our wonderful plant sale community. We’re proud to work with mostly local growers. We are also immensely grateful to all of our volunteers, many of whom are Friends School families, alumni, and students.
- Equity We work to keep the sale physically accessible and price food plants affordably. In our classrooms, we have honest, ongoing conversations about belonging, systemic injustice, and what it means to actively work toward a more equitable world.
- Stewardship As a policy, the plants we sell are neonicotinoid (pesticides harmful to pollinators) free. Our middle schoolers researched neonicotinoids, and then went to the capitol and lobbied a state senator to support a ban. That’s what stewardship looks like at our school: learning something, caring about it, and doing something about it.
