When We Create and Express Ourselves, We Learn Something New

Every year in the third and fourth grade we engage our students in a big poetry unit. We read and discuss poems, share poetry techniques, and write a variety of different styles and forms of poetry. There are I Am From poems, personification poems, poems in response to paintings, poems in response to nature, and several other forms.

By Andrew Rutledge grade 3/4 teacher

At its heart, poetry is about expressing our understandings of ourselves and the world, an attempt to express the inexpressible, and a tradition of translating life through words. After creating these poems, we translated yet again as we painted our poems into being as watercolors. Every time we create and express ourselves, we learn something new.

Traditionally we perform these poems for families before winter break at our poetry evening. Learning to speak clearly and share our voices with the ones that love us best is a wonderful way to gain the confidence to speak our truths into the world.
