Our middle school mock trial club ended with a not liable verdict. Dr. Ramidus was found not liable for medical malpractice during a knee surgery.
Each student had a role and wrote their own scripts to follow. They were poised and well prepared by the time of the trial. Each side presented a solid case to the jury (teachers Egohsa and Emily).
Mock trial teaches public speaking, critical thinking, and the art of forming a persuasive, cohesive argument. There is also an element of acting and playing a character and students learn how a courtroom works.
For the FSMN Mock Trial Club the students had a prepared case that they studied and then created scripts based on the high school case materials from the Minnesota State Bar Association. For the FSMN Mock Trial summer camp, students will write their own case.
