Getting Involved and Supporting Friends School
Friends School of Minnesota is a wonderful school and has a supportive, active community. There are so many ways to be connected to, get involved with, and support the school.
Volunteering at FSM
Friends School has a proud history of volunteer involvement. Parents, grandparents, alumni and community members work in classrooms, serve on committees, organize fundraising events and much more. As a volunteer at FSM, you will be joining a dedicated team of teachers, staff and administrators who are working together for the success of all FSM students. Your gift of time and talent will have an enormous impact on the children at Friends School. We are now using VolunteerLocal to manage many of our volunteer needs. Questions? Email Jenni to discuss your volunteer interests.
Volunteering at the Plant Sale
The Friends School Plant Sale has its own website: www.friendsschoolplantsale.com where you can sign up to volunteer online starting each January. This huge sale is always on the weekend of the second Sunday in May - Mother's Day weekend. We are famous for this sale, which draws thousands each year, requires hundreds of volunteers and generates a significant amount of recognition and financial support for our school. Virtually every family volunteers at this major fund-raising event. You will hear about how to sign up to volunteer in our newsletter.
Giving to Friends School of Minnesota
Friends School has a long-standing commitment to providing access to all students who want to come to FSM. Tuition alone does not cover the annual expenses of the school, so we work to raise the additional financial support we need through three annual events:
The Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is important way all members of the community exercise citizenship through involvement, commitment and investment. Each year parents, alumni parents, alumni, staff, grandparents, Quakers and friends of the school contribute to the annual fund.
The Annual Fund supports financial aid, staff compensation, classroom materials and supplies, and all that falls under the school's annual operating budget. Donations to the annual fund enhance the quality of every student's educational experience in the classroom and throughout the school.
Gala, Silent Auction, and Great Gatherings
The Gala and silent auction is a wonderful way to get out, meet with other parents (without children!), eat great food, and participate in a live auction. This is also where you can sign up for one of many Great Gatherings, events hosted by community members and lots of fun. Email Jenni to learn more.
The Friends School Plant Sale
The Friends School Plant Sale is held Mother's Day weekend at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand with 2,300 varieties of plants. The 2016 sale will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 6, 7, and 8. Support FSM by purchasing plants at the sale or as a volunteer.
Committee Work and Governance
Governance at FSM
Friends School of Minnesota is a nonprofit corporation. The 16 to 21-member board of directors of Friends School is called the School Committee. The School Committee adopts school policies and is the legal body ultimately responsible for the financial health and operation of the school. There are also six standing committees of the School Committee. Membership on these committees includes School Committee members, parents, staff, other Quakers and other interested individuals.
Parent Involvement Committee
All parents and guardians of students currently enrolled at Friends School of Minnesota (FSM) are members of the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) and are welcome to participate in PIC general meetings and PIC standing committees.
